AT&T, an American telecom company, has announced 5G Evolution plans in a bid to reach the next generation of really fast internet connectivity. The multinational telecom company has begun testing the 5G Evolution technology in a few areas in Austin and according to the company, it will be announced for more than 20 major metro areas by the end of 2017. The network provider said that, in Austin, the technology provides twice the speeds of the usual 4G LTE network, and it will be available for users on almost all AT&T data plans with a Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ smartphones. David Christopher, chief marketing officer, AT&T Entertainment Group in a press release, said, “Our 5G Evolution in Austin gives our customers a taste of the future.”
Christopher also said, “With 5G Evolution from AT&T you don’t have to wait to experience endless entertainment possibilities on the next generation network when you have the latest devices.” Interestingly, International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the 3GPP haven’t released standards for 5G and that means 5G technology is mostly unavailable in the world right now, The Verge reported. Only the logo for 5G has been approved by 3GPP. Meanwhile, AT&T has also said that it will offer the same technology on ‘numerous other devices’.
The company has said that it has been able to achieve the advanced 5G Evolution using technology upgrades like carrier aggregation, 4×4 MIMO, 256 QAM and others. It remains to be seen when such a technology will come to India, a country where a large part of the population does not even have basic connectivity.
Interestingly, in a recent report by communication technology and services provider Ericsson said that revenue from 5G-enabled digitisation in India will reach $25.9 billion by the year 2026. Also, tech giant Nokia and India’s leading government service provider BSNL had recently announced the plans for a strategy to reach the network evolution to 5G services introduce a fast internet ecosystem in the country. Additionally, similar plans were announced about a tie-up between Reliance Jio and Airspan.
