Technology giant Google has started rolling out the Play Protect feature, which was announced in May during its annual developer conference Google I/O 2017. The feature is being rolled out to Android devices running Google Mobile Services 11 or later. It scans all the apps for malware, before and after they are installed. It's represented by a security badge icon.
After the update, some users will see a new banner on the Google Play store and can find the Google Play protect icon under the Updates tab in 'My Apps and Games' section. Some of the apps which have passed the Play Protect test will carry a 'Verified by Play Protect' sticker.
Google Play Protect further allows users to find their lost devices via the 'Find My Device' service. Users can sign in to their Google account remotely, or call on the device directly from the browser. It also locks the display of the phone remotely and shows a message with a contact number, so that it someone finds the lost smartphone, he/she can return it to the owner.
The feature includes a 'Safe Browsing' option for Google Chrome browser, which alerts users if they visit malicious websites.
In an official statement, the company said, "Google Play Protect continuously works to keep your device, data and apps safe. It actively scans your device and is constantly improving to make sure that you have the latest in mobile security. Your device is automatically scanned around the clock to give you peace of mind."
The company believes that the new feature will reduce downloads of malicious apps from the Google Play Store.
