The iPhone X was launched a few days ago to much acclaim and shock alike. Acclaim at the smartphone's radical bezel-less design, future forward Augmented Reality features, Super Retina display and most of all Face ID. Shock at the staggering 1 lakh plus sticker price. Now it seems that that Face ID, the iPhone X's game-changing feature might only support one face per device.
According to a report by TechCrunch, Face ID on the iPhone X will support just one registered face per device, at least initially. The reason behind this as per the report is that an iPhone owner has just one face to use to unlock the device. Touch ID allows you to register multiple fingers (up to 5) because depending on how you are using the device, it is convenient to use one finger over the other.
The problem is that currently many iPhone users register the fingerprints of their loved ones - kids, spouses, parents and so on. With a one face only per device policy, the iPhone X would obviously not allow for such an arrangement which could put off a lot of loyal fans.
On the other hand, an argument could also be made Apple is implementing this one face per device policy for security reasons - so that only the owner has unfettered access to the smartphone. After all, you can always tell your loved ones the alternative numerical password.
Face ID, which has replaced the fingerprint sensor on the iPhone X, is powered by an A11 Neural Bionic Engine which has a dual-core design and can perform 600 billion operations in a second. Every time you glance at the iPhone 8, it detects your face, even when it is dark thanks to a Flood Illuminator on board.
Apple asserts that its Face ID has a one in a million chance of being fooled by someone else's face. Apple claims that Face ID learns your face - it will work even if you put on glasses, grow a beard or get a different hairstyle. The iPhone X will go on sale in India from November 3. It is available in two variants - one with 64GB of internal storage for ₹89,000 and a higher-end variant with 256GB of internal storage for a whopping ₹1,02,000.
