Xiaomi Vice-President and Managing Director Manu Kumar Jain on Monday announced the company will soon launch its new Mi MIX 2 smartphone in India. Xiaomi had unveiled the successor to the Mi MIX bezel-less smartphone at an event in China yesterday. The company had also showcased the Mi Note 3 smartphone and a Mi Notebook Pro laptop.
Xiaomi’s first-generation Mi MIX smartphone had remained exclusive to China market. The smartphone, however, had gained a wide attention for being one of the first mobile devices to come with a near bezel-less screen. The smartphone boasted an impressive 91.3% screen-to-body ratio, setting a new trend in the industry. Shortly after, a plethora of smartphones were launched with a similar bezel-less gimmick.
While the likes of Samsung are offering an ‘Infinity Display’ (display with higher screen-to-body ratio) on its premium smartphones, Micromax and LG are offering something similar on the much affordable Canvas Infinity and LG Q6 respectively.
The Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 comes with a better 18:9 screen ratio as compared to the previous generation’s odd 17:9 aspect ratio. The new smartphone is claimed to be 11.5% lighter and 11.9% slimmer than the predecessor. The Mi MIX 2 has a smaller 5.99-inch full HD+ display with 2160×1080 pixels resolution and 403ppi pixel density. The older version had a larger 6.4-inch display with 2040 x 1080 pixels resolution and lesser 362ppi pixel density.
The phone also comes with improved performance as it is powered by Qualcomm’s top-end Snapdragon 835 64-bit octa-core processor coupled with 6GB of RAM and Adreno 540 GPU. It runs on Android Nougat-based MIUI 9 out-of-the-box.
It has a 12-megapixel rear camera with IMX386 sensor, f/2.0 aperture, Phase Detection Auto Focus (PDAF), Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS) and 5P lens. The 5-megapixel front-facing camera supports full HD video recording. Other key features include Bluetooth 5.0, 3,400mAh battery with Quick Charge support and a fingerprint sensor on the back.
In China, the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 was launched in multiple variants - 64GB, 128GB and 256GB. The three variants come for RMB 3,299 (₹32,400 approximately), RMB 3,599 (₹35,000 approximately) and RMB 3,999 (₹39,000) respectively.
The company also introduced a limited edition of the Mi MIX 2. Priced at RMB 4,699 (₹39,000 approximately), the special edition has a ceramic body, 128GB of built-in storage and a massive 8GB of RAM.
