Opera, the Norway-based developer company, has removed its Opera Max data saving application from Google Play. The app, which was launched in 2014, will not be available for Android users with immediate effect.
The company officially announced the news in a blog post. It however, did not reveal why it discontinued the data management app. "Opera Max, the app that allowed users to manage and reduce data usage across their Android mobile phone applications, was initially released in 2014. Opera has now decided to discontinue Opera Max. The product had a substantially different value proposition than our browser products, and represented a different focus for Opera. We, therefore, focus on our browsers and other upcoming services," said the blog post.
As for those who have already downloaded the Opera Max app and are using it, the company says there won't be any more upgrades for them. Furthermore it has been revealed that the app will work fine for "a period of time". The company will let users know about the termination of server-side support in due time.
This move by Opera comes as a big surprise for many. The company in May this year introduced Opera Max 3.0. The version was a "major update with an all new design, optimized for easier use of the powerful data savings and data management tools inside Opera Max."
For those unaware, Opera Max showcased how much data each app on the smartphone was consuming -- both when using phone data and Wi-Fi. The app also let users save some data by compressing content such as images, videos and more. Users were able to see their data usage numbers based on a single day, a month or in 'All Time' sections.
The last update brought a separate feature to save data specifically when using Facebook. "With just one tap, you can launch Opera Max's Facebook web app and have the benefits of a VPN connection, saving sessions and other settings all auto-configured to get you going and saving on Facebook data usage," said the blog post.
